Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc., rose from unloading trucks as a teenager to leading one of the world’s largest retailers. A visionary leader, he has driven Walmart’s digital transformation, global expansion, and sustainability initiatives while prioritizing employee growth and empowerment. His focus on adaptability and long-term vision continues to shape Walmart’s success in the evolving retail landscape.

Doug McMillon was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1966 and raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas. At age 17, he began working at Walmart in 1984, unloading trucks at a distribution center to earn money for college. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas and an MBA from the University of Tulsa. While pursuing his MBA, McMillon rejoined Walmart, taking on a role in a Tulsa store after being encouraged by a senior executive. He quickly advanced through the company, working in merchandising across various categories including fishing gear, diapers, and crafts. He even presented to Sam Walton himself at a Saturday morning meeting in 1991.

McMillon’s leadership trajectory accelerated when he became CEO of Sam’s Club in 2005, followed by his appointment as head of Walmart International in 2009. In this role, he oversaw operations in multiple countries and helped expand Walmart’s global footprint. In 2014, McMillon was named President and CEO of Walmart Inc., becoming the fifth person to hold the position since the company’s founding. Under his leadership, Walmart has undergone a major transformation. He prioritized employee investment by raising wages, expanding parental leave, and launching the “Live Better U” program, which offers associates access to debt-free education.

McMillon also led Walmart’s aggressive push into digital retail. He expanded e-commerce operations, introduced grocery delivery and curbside pickup, and launched Walmart+, a subscription service aimed at competing with other online retail giants. His focus on technology included deploying autonomous scanners and floor cleaners, enhancing inventory management and customer experience.

Internationally, McMillon spearheaded strategic moves such as acquiring Flipkart in India, partnering with Rakuten in Japan, and launching digital payment solutions like Cashi in Mexico. These initiatives positioned Walmart for long-term growth in emerging markets. He also emphasized sustainability through initiatives like Project Gigaton, which aims to reduce one billion metric tons of emissions by 2030.

Doug McMillon’s leadership philosophy centers on adaptability, long-term vision, and empowering associates. He believes that investing in people and embracing change are key to Walmart’s continued success in a rapidly evolving retail landscape.
