Elon Musk, born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, is one of the most influential figures in modern technology. Known for founding or leading Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, X (formerly Twitter), and xAI, Musk has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation. As of 2025, Forbes estimates his net worth at around $425 billion.

Early Life and Education

Musk showed early interest in technology, teaching himself programming and selling a video game at age 12. He moved to Canada at 17, later transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in economics and physics. He dropped out of a Stanford PhD program after two days to pursue the internet boom.

Early Ventures: Zip2 and PayPal

In 1995, Musk co-founded Zip2, an online city guide for newspapers. Compaq acquired it in 1999 for $307 million, netting Musk $22 million. He then founded X.com, an online bank, which merged with Confinity to become PayPal. After internal disputes, Musk was ousted as CEO, but remained the largest shareholder when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002, earning him about $180 million.

Tesla: Revolutionizing Electric Vehicles

Musk joined Tesla in 2004 as an investor and became CEO in 2008. Tesla’s Roadster (2008) proved EVs could be high-performance. Model S (2012) and Model 3 (2017) helped Tesla become a mainstream automaker. Tesla also expanded into energy with solar and battery products. By 2020, Tesla became the world’s most valuable car company, influencing the global shift to electric vehicles.

SpaceX: Making Space Accessible

Founded in 2002, SpaceX aimed to reduce space launch costs and enable Mars colonization. After early failures, it succeeded in 2008 and secured a $1.6 billion NASA contract. SpaceX pioneered reusable rockets, launched the Falcon Heavy, and developed Starship for deep space missions. In 2020, it became the first private company to send astronauts to orbit. Its Starlink project now operates thousands of satellites, providing global internet access.

Neuralink and The Boring Company

Neuralink, founded in 2016, develops brain-computer interfaces. It aims to treat neurological conditions and eventually augment human cognition. In 2023, it received FDA approval for human trials. The Boring Company, launched in 2016, builds underground tunnels to reduce urban traffic. Its first operational project is the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop.

X (Twitter) and xAI

In 2022, Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion, rebranded it as X, and aimed to transform it into an “everything app.” His changes sparked controversy over content moderation and user experience. In 2023, he launched xAI to build safe, truth-seeking AI. xAI collaborates with Musk’s other ventures and aims to compete with OpenAI and Google.

Leadership Style and Philosophy

Musk is known for his intense work ethic, hands-on leadership, and first-principles thinking. He sets ambitious goals and expects high performance. While admired for his vision, he’s also criticized for being harsh and impulsive. He believes in solving humanity’s biggest problems—climate change, multiplanetary survival, and AI safety—through engineering and entrepreneurship.

Broader Impact

Musk has reshaped multiple industries. Tesla accelerated the EV revolution. SpaceX revitalized space exploration. His ventures have inspired a new generation of engineers and entrepreneurs. While polarizing, Musk’s influence on technology, business, and culture is undeniable.
