Product Overview
Headwall Photonics
Headwall is an industry leader in building precise hyperspectral imaging sensors for OEMs, as well as complete imaging systems for end-users in the remote sensing, advanced machine vision, defense/security, and medical/biotech markets.
Our customers count on Headwall's devices to ensure food safety and quality, detect infrastructure wear and corrosion, keep our military safe, and to identify and monitor disease progression.
Headwall produces its own holographic diffraction gratings and spectral modules for OEMs who wish to integrate these into their own imaging products. These precise spectral components differentiate Headwall from other imaging sensor companies in the form of high spectral and spatial resolution, high signal-to-noise, low stray light, a wide field of view, and small-form-factor instruments.

Hyperspectral Sensors
What Makes Us Stand Out
Headwall's HYPERSPEC family of hyperspectral sensors and imaging systems are small, light, and rugged. The elegant all-concentric design uses precisely engineered master-quality holographic diffraction gratings made in our world-class cleanroom facilities to deliver outstanding signal-to-noise and spectral and spatial resolution, and a wide, aberration-corrected field of view.
Because airborne-acquired spectral data is influenced by several variables including atmospheric absorption and scattering, sensor-target-illumination geometry, sensor calibration, and image data processing procedures, Headwall offers radiometric calibration services.
Integrated Airborne Systems
Fly the Spectrum
A key to success is having the right tools. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into the go-to platform for many remote-sensing applications. Headwall's integrated hyperspectral sensor drones combine our advanced sensors with a choice of GPS/IMU mounted on a high-performance UAV. LiDAR and active stabilizing gimbals are also available for many configurations. Our solutions are fully data-tested, and training is available at our facility or online.
Scanning Kits, Rotational Stages, and Illumination
Important Accessories
HYPERSPEC sensors are line-scanning hyperspectral cameras (sometimes called ‘pushbroom’ sensors) that collect reflected light through an image slit. One row of spatial pixels is collected per frame as the sensor or subject moves, with each pixel containing full spectral data. Motion can happen as a consequence of the platform (e.g., rotary or linear stage, UAV, aircraft, satellite) or the subject (e.g., food inspection line, conveyor belt). A hyperspectral data cube is created containing complete X, Y, and wavelength data that can be analyzed and managed through Headwall's or even third-party software.
Scanning Kits
Our Scanning Kits come in two sizes for use on the benchtop. You can place specimens/samples onto a flat stage that can be easily cleaned if necessary. The stage is programmed by Headwall software to move at a precise speed, enabling capture of hyperspectral imaging data at high spatial and spectral resolution. A variety of sensors can be mounted to the scanning kits with a choice of lenses for optimal field-of-view and focusing distance.
Illumination
Most remote-sensing missions rely on sunlight for illumination. However, many industrial, biomedical, and other applications require artificial light to illuminate the subject. Headwall offers a variety of broadband lighting systems for wavelengths matching the sensitivities of our sensors.
An OEM
Development Process
We have decades of experience taking a concept from idea to design, prototyping, validation, optimization, verification, and to mass production. We are with you all the way as a trusted hyperspectral imaging OEM partner with thousands of OEM products in the field and on the benchtop.
Application-Specific Sensors
Optimized for Need
As a company that designs and manufactures the core optical components of our hyperspectral imaging systems, Headwall can also create application-specific sensors. These sensors can be optimized from the ground up to address the requirements of groups of customers who have a specific need. Our Solar-Induced Fluorescence imaging sensor was developed with input by domain experts, ultimately meeting or exceeding its design goals and winning the prestigious OSA Team Engineering Excellence Award.
